CHICAGO, July 13 (Reuters) - Network equipment maker Juniper Networks Inc. (NASDAQ:JNPR) posted a quarterly net loss on Tuesday, but its profit excluding one-time items blew past Wall Street's expectations as demand in the telecommunications segment strengthened.

Juniper, a smaller rival of Cisco Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO), reported a second-quarter net loss of $12.6 million, or 2 cents a share, compared with a net profit in the year-ago quarter of $13.6 million, or 3 cents a share.

This year's quarter included results from network security company NetScreen Technologies, which Juniper acquired in April for $3.4 billion in stock to diversify away from the telecom sector.

Excluding one-time items related to the acquisition, however, Juniper earned 8 cents a share, double what analysts were expecting, according to Reuters Estimates.

Sales in the quarter rose to $306.9 million, beating analysts' expectations for $275.1 million, according to Reuters Estimates. In the year-ago quarter, the No. 2 maker of equipment that directs Internet traffic posted sales of $165.1 million.

Analysts were expecting Juniper to post a profit before one-time items of 4 cents a share on sales of $275.1 million, according to Reuters Estimates.
