It's Value Time Again
by John Mauldin

First, let's look at what I mean by a secular bear market. I argued in Bull's Eye Investing and this weekly letter that secular market cycles should be looked at in terms of valuation and not in terms of price. Looking at them in terms of valuations makes the cycles far more clear and also offers some suggestions as to how to invest within the cycle.
Markets, at least historically, have always gone from high valuations to low valuations and back to high valuations. These long-term cycles average about 13 years, with a short cycle of 8 years and a long cycle of 17. Each cycle has bull and bear markets (in terms of price) within them, and the market moves can be quite volatile.

Wages No Bar to Fed Pause After Move Tomorrow
Bernanke's Course
Putting all these labor-cost indicators together, there is no reason for Fed officials not to follow the course Chairman Ben S. Bernanke laid out in his congressional testimony on April 27. He indicated then that, data permitting, there would be a pause in June but possibly more increases later if the Fed's forecast of slower growth and contained inflation didn't materialize.

The Halloween Effect in US Sectors
All US stock market sectors and industries perform better during winter than during summer in our sample from 1926-2005. In more than two-third of all sectors and industries this difference in summer and winter returns, known as the Halloween effect, is statistically significant and in half of all sectors and industries risk premia are negative during summer. However, while all sectors and industries show this effect, there are large differences across sectors and industries. The effect is almost absent in sectors related to consumer consumption but strong in production sectors. We illustrate how these differences between sectors might be used to improve the risk return trade off using sector rotation based on Fidelity sector funds and show how an investor might have benefited from such a trading strategy.

Från Schaeffers web
I was just doing some number crunching regarding the recent upward trend in the S&P 500 versus the decline in the dollar over the past six months. I found that a euro-denominated S&P 500 would actually be lower since the dollar's peak on 11/16/05. The actual S&P 500 has risen from 1231 to about 1324 (approx 7.5 percent) over that period. If you convert that to euros, however, the index has fallen from 1048 to 1035 (approx -1.25 percent) over that period. This means that European investors investing in the S&P 500 are looking at a loss over the past six months. A similar situation is probably true for many of the other major world currencies that have been outperforming the dollar. This can't be a strong indication of global investors looking toward the U.S. to put their money.

Janszen: Can hedge funds and other investment pools control these markets and make them risky to invest in?
Rogers: They can try but in the long run attempts to manipulate commodities prices always fail. Take oil, for example. Six trillion ($6,000,000,000,000) of oil trades every day. Not even governments can control those kinds of capital flows, not for long. That goes for currencies, too. Short term, yes they can be manipulated. But eventually market forces take over and the supply-demand market forces for oil long term will drive prices up. Governments can try to support the dollar, for example, but in the long run these efforts will eventually fail.

Why Iraq and now Iran?

Let us be clear about this: Iran (unlike Israel, Pakistan, India, and self-declared North Korea) does not posses nuclear weapons. Everyone, even in Washington, agrees on this. Even US Director of National Intelligence John Negroponte estimates that in spite of Iran's declaration that it has managed to enrich uranium, Iran will not have a bomb within four to nine years from now.
The main argument against Iran is that Iran is enriching uranium. Under the "Treaty on the Non-proliferation of Nuclear Weapons" (NPT) [16], all members are guaranteed the right to enrich uranium.
Article four of the treaty states that: "Nothing in this Treaty shall be interpreted as affecting the inalienable right of all the Parties to the Treaty to develop research, production and use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes without discrimination and in conformity with articles I and II of this Treaty."
This clearly gives Iran and other member states the right to do research and enrich uranium. So what Iran is doing is totally legal. In contrast we see that all the nuclear states such as Great Britain, Russia, China, France, and United States are in violation of this treaty. The treaty clearly states that nuclear powers have to disarm.

Around the same time, something happened in the Middle East that the Israel Insider magazine calls "the ugliest secret of Israel's Labor Party founders." Others call it the "Sephardi Holocaust."
In 1951, allegedly with the assistance of the U.S. Army, about 100,000 Sephardi children--Sephardim are Jewish-Arab immigrants--were used as guinea pigs in a mass radiation experiment. To avoid suspicion by the parents, the mostly Moroccan children were taken on "school trips" where they received a radiation treatment, purportedly for ringworm infection.
"Every Sephardi child was to be given 35,000 times the maximum dose of x-rays through his head," states the Israel Insider. "For doing so, the American government paid the Israeli government 300 million Israeli liras a year. . . equivalent to billions of dollars today."

Hedge Funds and Systemic Risk
mest intressante är följande:
"In the final analysis, authorities cannot entirely eliminate systemic risk. To try to do so would likely stifle innovation without achieving the intended goal. However, authorities should (and will) try to ensure that the lapses in risk management of 1998 do not happen again. Private market participants, too, have their role to play in ensuring that such lapses do not recur. The principles articulated in the CRMPG's reports are a good starting place for firms, and senior management should rigorously assess their operations against those principles and commit the resources to address deficiencies. Authorities' primary task is to guard against a return of the weak market discipline that left major market participants overly vulnerable to market shocks. Continued focus on counterparty risk management is likely the best course for addressing systemic concerns related to hedge funds. This public policy approach does not entail the moral hazard concerns created by authorities' monitoring of positions using a private database. Rather, a focus on counterparty risk management places the responsibility for monitoring risk squarely on the private market participants with the best incentives and capacity to do so. "

However, people should not ignore the fact that when China is rapidly advancing the reform of RMB exchange rate mechanism and actively promoting the trade balance through expanding domestic demand, the US dollar simply continues acting like a "spoiled child" within the international financial system, selfish and self-indulgent, not willing to be responsible for its dominant reserve status in the international financial system, for the excessive issuance of the currency, and for its low saving rates.

Does Iran's President Want Israel Wiped Off The Map - Does He Deny The Holocaust?
by repost Wednesday, May. 17, 2006 at 10:33 AM
It's becoming clear. The statements of the Iranian President have been reflected by the media in a manipulated way. Iran's President betokens the removal of the regimes, that are in power in Israel and in the USA, to be possible aim for the future. This is correct. But he never demands the elimination or annihilation of Israel. He reveals that changes are potential. The Shah-Regime being supported by the USA in its own country has been vanquished. The eastern governance of the Soviet Union collapsed. Saddam Hussein's dominion drew to a close. Referring to this he voices his aspiration that changes will also be feasible in Israel respectively in Palestine. He adduces Ayatollah Khomeini referring to the Shah-Regime who in this context said that the regime (meaning the Shah-Regime) should be removed. "

Good Reason to Stay Cool Amid New Inflation Scare
Much evidence says the underlying trend remains disinflationary, thanks to the powerful forces of global economic progress and new technology exemplified by the Internet. Globalization and innovation promote increased competition and productivity, both of which work to keep inflation in check.
This is an awfully simplistic view I'm propounding, isn't it? Yes, and intentionally so. To keep the kind of perspective and patience necessary to be a true long-term investor, I can't get bogged down in too much ephemeral detail.
If I focus too intently on every threat that rears its head in the day-to-day economic news, I never run out of reasons to put off risking my money in anything more variable than a Treasury bill.
