U.S. industrial production tumbled once again in May,
falling right in line with Wall Street expectations.
Industrial production fell 1.1 in May, the Federal Reserve said Tuesday.
Output fell a revised 0.7 in April.
Capacity utilization fell to 68.3. In April, capacity use was a revised
69.0. The 1972-2008 average was 80.9.
The data largely matched expectations. Economists had expected industrial
production to fall 1.1 in May, with a capacity utilization rate of 68.2 for
the month.
Over the 12 months ended in May, industrial production was 13.4 lower, while
capacity use up only slight by 0.1 from a year earlier.
Manufacturing production fell 1.0 in May, due to broad-based declines across
various industries, the report said. Manufacturing had fallen 0.6 in April and
declined 1.9 in March. Those declines are smaller than the 2.9 fall reported
for December.
Meanwhile, manufacturing capacity utilization fell to 65.0 from 65.6.
Output in the mining industry fell 2.1 in May after falling 3.2 in April.
Mining capacity fell to 80.8 in May from 82.5 in April.
Utilities production fell 1.4 last month, the Fed said. It rose 0.7 in
April. Utilities capacity use also fell, to 79.4 in May after rising slightly
to 80.6 in April.
Manufacturing of motor vehicles and parts fell 7.9 in May. Motor vehicles
and parts capacity use was 38.3, a significant drop from even December when it
was 50.5.
Excluding autos, U.S. industrial production would be down 0.9.
Machinery production fell 3.4 in May after a 2.5 decrease in April.
Business equipment fell 1.4 after falling 1.9 in April.
The Feds industrial production data do not include services sectors, which
make up most of the U.S. economy.
