Alcoa said late Tuesday net income for the third quarter rose to $555 million, or 63 cents a share, from $537 million, or 61 cents a share, in the year-ago quarter. Earnings excluding discontinued operations rose to 64 cents from 62 cents a share. The New York-based aluminum producer said sales slipped to $7.4 billion from $7.6 billion. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial had forecast earnings of 65 cents a share on sales of $7.4 billion.

Alcoa, Inc.  said late Tuesday it plans to buy back up to 25% of its outstanding shares, up from earlier plans to buy back 10% of its stock. The New York-based aluminum producer said it's already bought back 5% of its shares this year. The increased authorization gives Alcoa the green light to purchase an additional 174 million shares, worth $6.9 billion based on Tuesday's closing price. It has more than $1.3 billion in cash on hand. Ahead of the statement, shares rose 3.7% to close at $39.72
