STOCKHOLM (Direkt) Antalet sysselsatta utanför
jordbrukssektorn i USA minskade med 63.000 personer i
februari. Arbetslösheten var samtidigt 4,8 procent, ned från
4,9 procent månaden före.

Analytiker räknade med att sysselsättningen skulle
öka med 25.000 jämfört med månaden före, och att
arbetslösheten skulle vara 5,0 procent, enligt Bloomberg News
prognosgenomsnitt.

I januari sjönk sysselsättningen med reviderade 22,
tidigare -17.000, och decembersiffran reviderades samtidigt
till +41.000 från +82.000.

Fed fortsätter avfyra sina skott... Det är bara att fortsätta bevaka och se.

Och som ni märker varje gång börsen vänder så börjar optimisterna tala om botten.

The first four moves were as such:

August 17: The Federal Reserve cuts the discount rate, narrowing its difference from the federal-funds rate to a half-percentage point, from a full percentage point. The news led to a 400-point rally in the Dow industrials over four trading sessions. The Dow remained buoyant until the middle of October, when it started to sink .

December 12: Prior to the market?s open, the Fed announces the creation of the Term Auction Facility. The market had declined by 300 points the day before, when the Fed cut rates by a mere 0.25 percentage point. The one-day rally on this news amounts to just 40 points, and the industrials never manage to gain any ground through the rest of the year.

January 23: As global economic worries engulf foreign markets, prior to the market open. The Fed surprises the market with a cut of 0.75 percentage point. That day, the Dow gains 300 points, beginning a fresh rally that lasts for another two weeks before fizzling out.

March 7: The Fed announces an increase in the TAF auction, along with a new 28-day repo, just before the jobs figure is released. In a bit of reverse psychology, the Dow falls by more than 100 points as investors wonder,

 "What does the Fed know?"

But the market has seen this movie before, and so far, it hasn?t done the trick. Will this work? "If you define the problem as a purely irrational move in the credit markets, then you might think this is a panacea," note analysts at Bianco Research. However, they say, if housing prices ? the underlying factor in this mess ? continue to fall, this move may be yet another one that is steamrolled by the markets

Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson has had some weird pronouncements before, but this one in a speech to the American Bankers Association is particularly odd. "If you?re in the financial services industry and you either need capital or you might, it?s very important to go get it while it?s available," he said. Umm?thanks?

Here?s a bit of sunny news out of Smithers & Co., an investment advisory based in London. They note that the S&P Banking stocks index fell 40% between Dec. 26, 2007 to March 3, 2008. "Assuming unchanged book values, this is sufficient to bring down the P/BV from 1.75 to nearly 1," they write. "Unfortunately they may still be overpriced as history shows that crises can destroy 100% of bank equity."

Angående dubbel botten... Först talade man om nivåer runt 1360 som måste hålla för att vi slipper mer nedgång... marknaden trodde på dubbel botten eftersom den höll flera gånger  men stödet brast senare

Och nu gäller 1270... som möjligt dubbel botten...

Spx kan som max stiga mot 1340-1350 innan vi vänder ner igen och vi kanske aldrig nå dessa nivåer ( idag menar jag )

Det är mest intressant att följa hur nedgången mot 1310-1300 kommer att vara...

Och jag tror det runt dessa nivåer vi kommer att få en del svar..

och den andra vändningen från 1300-1310 mot 1340-1350...

Stänger vi över dessa nivåer bör man börja möblera om lite...

STOCKHOLM (Direkt) Oro för att ökande kreditförluster
och den svaga dollarn ska påverka resultaten för asiatiska
banker och exportbolag lade en rejäl sordin på stämningen i
regionen på torsdagen. Samtliga ledande index backade
ordentligt med just banker och exportbolag som sänken.

Sett till hela regionen var Morgan Stanleys
sammanvägda Asienindex, MSCI Asia Pacific Index, ned 2,2
procent.

"Det finns en hel del rädsla på marknaderna. Vad man
vill veta är hur många Carlyle Capitals som finns där ute",
säger David Ng vid Hwang-DBS Asset Management i Kuala Lumpur
till Bloomberg News.

Carlyle Capital meddelade på torsdagen att fonden
inte lyckats nå en överenskommelse med dess långivare, varför
en likvidation är nära.

Beskedet tryckte ned finanssektorn med Mitsubishi
UFJ, som är Japans största bank, som sänke. Aktien var ned
7,3 procent och fick sällskap på förlorarlistan av Shinsei
Bank som tappade 5 procent efter att banken också lämnat en
vinstvarning. Singapores största bank DBS Group Holdings var
ned 1,4 procent.

Banksektorn utvecklades sämst av branscherna inom
MSCI Asia Pacific Index på torsdagen, oron för sektorn
späddes på av att Merrill Lynch i en analys skrivit att de
åtgärder som Fed vidtagit hittills inte är tillräckliga för
att stävja kreditkrisen.

"Feds plan köper oss bara tid, det är åtgärder för
att stoppa blödningen, inget mer. Jag tror inte att vi sett
det värsta av kreditkrisen än", säger Lim Kok Boon, vid
Fortis Private Banking i Singapore.

Den allt starkare yenen, som på torsdagen nådde
rekordnivåer gentemot dollarn, pressade tillbaka
exportbolagen i Asien. Fordonsbolagen fanns bland förlorarna
med Toyota och Honda som sänken. Toyota tappade 4,4 procent
medan Honda var ned 5,1 procent. En annan stor exportör till
den amerikanska marknaden, speltillverkaren Nintendo, stängde
ned 5,9 procent.

Our best Guess...

Tanya Azarchs, the S&P analyst who helped Scott Bugie to write the report, appeared on a live interview on Bloomberg Television and reiterated the key points of the report, and the optimistic view they have.

There was one important caveat she mentioned. They assume that the housing markets will not continue to deteriorate, with an eye to the credit indexes in particular.

When pressed by Deidre Bolton, the Bloomberg interviewer, that this seemed like a big assumption and that some have already said that this call is premature, Tanya justified S&P's research conclusions by saying, "Well, this is our best guess."

The irony that ratings agencies that failed to see the subprime threat in the first place are now heralding the ends of the market's troubles has not been lost an analysts. 

Charles Rotblut, an analyst at Zacks Investment Research, wrote in a blog on Thursday that elation to the S&P news might be shortsighted.
"Credit is being given to Standard & Poor's prediction that the end of the subprime meltdown is coming, but they also increased their estimate of the total loss by nearly 10%," Rotblut said. "It's hard to believe that this firm's crystal ball is suddenly working."

However, the agency also warned that the broader credit crunch has dented the market prices of many other types of securities in recent weeks. If this continues, banks and brokers could be hit by another round of write-downs, S&P said.

"A major re-pricing of credit risk is taking place across the debt markets," S&P wrote. "If the wider spreads hold to the end of the first quarter or half of this year, financial institutions will suffer further market value write-downs of a broad range of exposures, including leveraged loans."

"None of the 80 AAA securities in ABX indexes that track subprime bonds meet the criteria S&P had even before it toughened ratings standards in February, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. A bond sold by Deutsche Bank AG in May 2006 is AAA at both companies even though 43 percent of the underlying mortgages are delinquent.

Sticking to the rules would strip at least $120 billion in bonds of their AAA status, extending the pain of a mortgage crisis that's triggered $188 billion in writedowns for the world's largest financial firms. AAA debt fell as low as 61 cents on the dollar after record home foreclosures and a decline to AA may push the value of the debt to 26 cents, according to Credit Suisse Group."


$120 billion in bonds valued at 26 cents would be a haircut of about 75%, or a loss to the banks of (another) $88 billion. Among these deals alone.

J.P. Morgan also said it's working with Bear to secure permanent financing or "other alternatives" for the brokerage firm.

"Our liquidity position in the last 24 hours had significantly deteriorated," Alan Schwartz, chief executive at Bear, said in a statement. "We took this important step to restore confidence in us in the marketplace, strengthen our liquidity and allow us to continue normal operations.

"Bear Stearns has been the subject of a multitude of market rumors regarding our liquidity," he added. "We have tried to confront and dispel these rumors and parse fact from fiction."

USA nästa vecka...

The economic calendar will kick off the week with the March New York State Empire Index, the January net foreign purchases report, and February's industrial production and capacity utilization data.

Tuesday we'll see the latest housing starts and building permits, as well as February's Producer Price Index (PPI) and core PPI.

However, those will likely be overshadowed by the latest interest-rate decision from the Federal Open Market Committee, expected to be handed down at 2:15 p.m. EST.

On Wednesday, the Street will bring us the usual crude inventories report.

Thursday the February leading indicators report will grace the market. Investors will be able to digest the busy week with a day off on Friday, as the market is closed in celebration of Good Friday.

Because of that S&P downgrade, bankers have now come to the conclusion that a deal must be done by Monday morning because no one on the street will trade or lend to Bear Stearns, which is rated a notch above junk bond levels. If the downgrade hadn't happened, Bear management would have had more time to work the Street for a deal, sources said.

The big question in the talks is price. Bear has been touting its $80 a share book value but no one is willing to pay that. It is very hard to value the firm and its businesses. One person close to the deal said the price could end up as low as $15 a share or less, depending on Bear's liabilities and balance sheet. Aside from its clearing and prime brokerage operations, which get good marks, the rest of Bear's business lines are considered mediocre at best, according to various Wall Street executives.

 The stress level at Bear among executives whose life savings is tied up in the company's stock was palpable Saturday as the meetings to determine the value of Bear continued.

"Everyone is here," said one Bear Stearns official on Saturday evening. "The dining room is open, the whole thing is open. It's just one big 10-hour meeting."

If there's no deal Bear Stearns will have to file for bankruptcy, executives said.

I am updating expectations for this Bear Market; I no longer believe 1070 on the SPX will hold, and have now moved to the camp that sees the potential for the S&P to retrace all of the 2003-2007 Bull Market's gains, taking us back to around 800 on the SPX.
