WASHINGTON -- Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac?s stock went into free fall as the housing slump threatened their capital. Mutual funds own about half of the mammoth mortgage companies and some have been punished during the fall.

Washington-based Fannie was held by 646 mutual funds, while McLean, Virginia-based Freddie was held by 597 funds as of Wednesday, said analyst David Kathman with Morningstar Inc.

Washington-based Fannie was held by 646 mutual funds, while McLean, Virginia-based Freddie was held by 597 funds as of Wednesday, said analyst David Kathman with Morningstar Inc.

Fannie and Freddie?s stocks are down about 80 percent so far this year, with losses accelerating in recent weeks. As of Wednesday?s closing, the twin government-sponsored enterprises, or GSEs, had lost a combined market value of $14 billion in two weeks.
