Fed Adds Most Reserves Since 9/11 Attacks as Banks Hoard Cash

``If the fed funds rate closes high today, I would be really worried as it would mean that there really is no money out there to be lent,'' said Stan Jonas, who trades interest- rate derivatives at Axiom Management Partners LLC in New York. ``

Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc., the nation's fourth largest U.S. investment bank, underwent the biggest bankruptcy filing in history after succumbing to the subprime mortgage crisis it helped create.
The 158-year-old company survived the railroad bankruptcies of the late 1800s, as well as the collapse of Wall Street in the 1930s, but was forced to file a Chapter 11 petition with U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan Sunday. (Newsroom)
The Federal government has asked The Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and JPMorgan Chase & Co. to lead a $70 billion to $75 billion lending facility for the flailing AIG, according to The Wall Street Journal.
In a last-ditch effort to avoid a possibly fatal ratings downgrade, American International Group Inc. of New York has been searching high and low this weekend for $40 billion to avert the ratings slash.
Just today, the insurer was granted permission by New York governor David Paterson to tap its subsidiaries for $20 billion to cover regular operating needs, making a bridge loan to itself. Normally, insurers face tough rules from state regulators on how they can shift assets, so as to ensure carriers have enough money to cover their policy obligations. (InvestmentNews)
Vad skall man säga? "Historiskt" är inget överord. Och mycket skrämmande.
Alla snackar om att sänka räntan. !!
Risk premien ligger helt enkelt högre idag.
"Markets are never wrong - opinions often are"
Press Release
Release Date: September 16, 2008
For immediate release
The Federal Open Market Committee decided today to keep its target for the federal funds rate at 2 percent.
Strains in financial markets have increased significantly and labor markets have weakened further. Economic growth appears to have slowed recently, partly reflecting a softening of household spending. Tight credit conditions, the ongoing housing contraction, and some slowing in export growth are likely to weigh on economic growth over the next few quarters. Over time, the substantial easing of monetary policy, combined with ongoing measures to foster market liquidity, should help to promote moderate economic growth.
Inflation has been high, spurred by the earlier increases in the prices of energy and some other commodities. The Committee expects inflation to moderate later this year and next year, but the inflation outlook remains highly uncertain.
The downside risks to growth and the upside risks to inflation are both of significant concern to the Committee. The Committee will monitor economic and financial developments carefully and will act as needed to promote sustainable economic growth and price stability.
Voting for the FOMC monetary policy action were: Ben S. Bernanke, Chairman; Christine M. Cumming; Elizabeth A. Duke; Richard W. Fisher; Donald L. Kohn; Randall S. Kroszner; Sandra Pianalto; Charles I. Plosser; Gary H. Stern; and Kevin M. Warsh. Ms. Cumming voted as the alternate for Timothy F. Geithner
